Today isn’t just the Summer Solstice, it’s also World Giraffe Day and the Columbus Zoo and Aquarium is celebrating with the news that two of their giraffes are pregnant. These would be the first giraffe births at the zoo in over twenty years.
In a statement, the zoo said the giraffes expecting calfs are 8-year-old Zuri and 6-year-old Cami. Zuri’s calf is due sometime between late August and mid-September, and Cami’s calf is due between late September and mid-October. The zoo is monitoring the animals and the babies are currently on track to arrive healthy.
These will be the first giraffes born in the Heart of Africa region since its opening in 2014.
