The Blue Jackets have traded wingers Nikolai Zherdev and Dan Fritsche to the New York Rangers for defensemen Fedor Tyutin and Christian Backman, The Dispatch has learned.
Both Tyutin, 24, and Backman, 28, are regarded as puck-moving defensemen, able to pass the puck out of the defensive zone and play the point on a power-play unit. Tyutin had five goals, 15 assists and a plus-5 rating in 82 games with the Rangers last season, while Backman had three goals, 15 assists and a minus-2 rating in 63 games with St. Louis and New York.
I really hope there’s something more coming down the pike. If not, I don’t like this deal at all. Both of these guys seem like second or third pairing defensemen at best (although granted Tyutin may have some room to grow), and the Jackets traded their second-best offensive player and a hard-working guy who chips in some big goals to get them. When the team struggles to score as it is.
