One Columbus woman’s long-time dream is coming true this weekend with the opening of Yarn It & Haberdashery in Grandview.

“I’ve always had it in my mind that I would want one [yarn store] but didn’t seriously look into it until about 4 years ago,” says Esther Hall, owner and curator of the shop. “Being on Craft Wars and actually vocalizing it to the public made me really pursue it. I just didn’t think it would happen so soon. I figured it would be more like some sort of retirement store.”

This Saturday, May 31st, the store opens to the public. A grand opening celebration is planned for June 22nd.

“I’ll be the only yarn store in Columbus to offer dyeing classes!” says Hall. Irina Grebennik is assisting with setting up the kettle dye in the classroom area of the store.

    What else will you find?

“Yarn, lot’s of yarn,” says Hall. “But also everything a knitter and crocheter will need to accompany their yarn such as needles, hooks and notions for their projects. There is also a splash of sewing items for repairs and simple sewing projects.”

The shop will also host monthly tea gatherings, knit-alongs for the community, and a range of knitting classes, crochet, felting, dyeing and spinning, plus will be one of the only places with public access to a knitting machine.

“Knitting machines are a fascination for people and even if you don’t knit on two sticks I can show you how to whip out a scarf or a pillow using one of my knitting machines in less than an hour,” she says.

Hall has carefully curated brands that Yarn It & Haberdashery will offer, bringing some to Ohio for the first time and giving other brands their Columbus debut.

“First in Ohio will be Be Sweet, Loopy Mango and Ewe Ewe yarns,” she says. “For the Columbus area, new brands are Erika Knight from the UK, Ozark Hand Knits, Knit Collage and Shibui.”

All of the brands fit her company’s philosophy of partnering with hard-working, small artisans. In the same vein, Yarn It & Haberdashery will offer Tastefully Dirty Skincare from Tiffany Meyer and have parties for Jamberry Nails by Ruby Harper.

She is also excited to host trunk shows for many artists from all over.

“Columbus is fortunate to be the host of The National Needle Arts Convention held only twice a year,” she says. “This means that all the yarn vendors come here and I’ll be able to host a good amount of trunk shows right around that time that no one else will be having.”

Creative displays in the shop’s window will be the norm at Yarn It & Haberdashery.

“That is one of the things I miss the most about my favorite past job- window displays at the 5th Ave, NYC Anthropologie store,” says Hall. “I want to take my passion from that and put it back into making a gorgeous window displays for everyone to enjoy. I’m also planning to continue my support of the arts community by inviting different artists to work with me on them.”

With Yarn It & Haberdashery, Hall hopes to build a stronger community and new connections for people who have the same love of craft. She’s also looking to inspire others to try something new and think outside of the box with color choices, patterns, and to embrace the freedom to work without a pattern.

“I am providing high quality yarns and fibers and working with a lot of other small businesses in the industry,” she says. “I have purposefully avoided being a stockiest for a lot of the larger yarn companies. It’s a risk but I think being where we are, our customers will appreciate the fresh breath of new products and fibers.”

Yarn It & Haberdashery will be open most days from 11am to 7pm, near Grandview at 1093 W. 1st Ave, Columbus, Ohio 43212. Opening day will be Saturday, May 31st from noon to 7pm. At the grand opening celebration on June 22nd, enjoy pastries from Pâtisserie Lallier, door prizes for the first 10 people, and free gifts for people spending over $100.
