Construction crews are busy at 1001 Atcheson St. on the Near East Side, where an 80-unit apartment building is on track to open by next fall.
The four-story building is a project of the Woda Cooper Companies (formerly the Woda Group), a Columbus-based developer of affordable housing.
To be known as Atcheson Place Lofts, the project is being characterized as workforce housing, or housing that is geared toward middle-income families and located close to job centers.
The building will hold 12 one-bedroom and 68 two-bedroom apartments, which will be affordable for renters making up to 80% of the area median income. It will have 74 parking spaces.
The two-acre parcel the new building will sit on, which has been an empty field for years, was bought by the developer in early 2020 for $450,000. It shares a block with the Mt Vernon Plaza shopping center and adjacent townhomes, as well as the 13-story Mt Vernon Plaza apartment building.
The previous owner of the site was a company affiliated with Yhezkel Levi, who has extensive holdings in the neighborhood, including the former Macon Hotel building around the corner, at 377 N. 20th St.
A zoning variance for the project was approved by the Board of Zoning Adjustment in early 2019, after being given the green light from the Near East Area Commission.
