Redesign of Livingston Avenue in German Village Underway

Bike lanes are coming to a section of East Livingston Avenue in German Village. The new five-foot-wide lanes on both sides of the street will start at Dixon Alley and continue east to Kennedy Drive, where they will connect up with the existing lanes that extend past Parsons Avenue.

Preliminary work is now underway on the project, which will also feature upgraded intersections and street lights as well as new sidewalks and street trees. New curbs will be made of sandstone to match the material that was historically utilized in the neighborhood.

Debbie Briner, Community Relations Coordinator for the city’s Department of Public Service, said that the north curb lane of Livingston is currently closed from City Park Avenue to South Fourth Street to accommodate the work, and that lane closures will move east as construction progresses. The scheduled completion date for the project is November of 2019.

Bike lanes will also be included in the street design of the new Grant Avenue bridge, which is currently under construction and scheduled to open by the end of the year.

The redesign of Livingston west of South Fifth Street will have to wait on the larger 70/71 split project. Phase 4R of that project – which will include a new ramp onto Fulton Street from I-70 East and an upgraded Front Street bridge – is slated to begin in 2020. Although plans also call for new bridges at South High, South Third and South Fourth streets, funding is not yet in place for those phases of the project.
