A new marriage quality educational campaign called “Why Marriage Matters” was launched across Ohio today as a new effort to support statewide marriage rights for committed couples of all orientations. Three simultaneous launch events took place in Cleveland, Columbus and Cincinnati this morning, featuring speakers from founding organizations including Equality Ohio Education Fund, Freedom to Marry, the Human Rights Campaign Foundation and American Civil Liberties Union Foundation of Ohio.
“All Americans should able to marry the person they love, and they should be able celebrate that love in Ohio,” said Senator Sherrod Brown at the Cleveland launch. “Full rights should not vary by geographical lines. Why Marriage Matters Ohio will bring this issue of equal rights to the forefront.”
A recent survey of Ohio voters showed support for marriage equality split at 47% on both sides. The new educational campaign aims to bring this important issue to the forefront of political discussion.
“Marriage matters,” said Elyzabeth Holford, Executive Director of Equality Ohio Education Fund, who spoke at the Columbus launch. “There are couples in Ohio living in legal limbo. It’s time to change that. Why Marriage Matters Ohio is part of our roadmap to fairness and dignity for all Ohioans.”
