Where are the Jobs in Columbus?

Looking for a job in the Central Ohio market? Then Robert Manduca has something that might be able to help you out. This Harvard student has created an interactive map of the US with pinpoints representing all job locations (from the 2010 census) across the country, separated by job type. The result is a visualization that shows job density in very specific locations, neighborhoods, suburbs and cities.

When it comes to Columbus, many types of jobs are spread out all over the city, but you’ll find a couple of big clusters in specific areas that probably won’t surprise you too much.

Downtown Columbus appears to have the highest levels of job density, which comes naturally with taller office towers. Those jobs are also almost exclusively focused on white collar jobs in the professional services, government, healthcare and education realms.

Dublin and Northwest Columbus is another dense cluster for jobs, focused primarily along the office parks that line both sides of I-270. Again, you’ll find mostly professional services and other white collar jobs here, along with a few more retail and hospitality options.

The Polaris area is another job cluster on the north side of town with a mix of professional services and a large number of retail jobs thanks to the concentration of shopping in the area.

Both Worthington and Westerville round out the north side of the city, each with a very diverse mix of manufacturing, retail, professional services, government, education and healthcare jobs.

The Easton area is an interesting spot on the map as it offers retail, services and manufacturing jobs in very distinct large clusters. This is likely due to the large office parks and shopping centers in the area that keep the specific types of jobs a bit more separated from each other.

The Far East Side, Far West Side and South Side of Columbus all show a more dispersed range of jobs in a less-dense environment, and is where you’ll find many more of the region’s industrial and manufacturing job centers. This is likely due to their proximity to logistic centers at Port Columbus on the East Side, Rickenbacker International on the South Side, and rail yards on the West Side.
