There are certain things that everyone looks forward to every year at the Ohio State Fair… the deep fried food-on-a-stick, the butter sculptures, the fireworks, and of course, the people watching. While these staples might usually be enough to lure you out to the fairgrounds, perhaps you’re on the fence this year and looking for some sort of new experience.
It’s often overshadowed by the aforementioned traditions, but every year the Ohio State Fair always brings in an assorted handful of one-off exhibitions and events that can prove to be just as entertaining. Here’s our quick list of the top five new things you shouldn’t miss at this year’s Ohio State Fair.
5. The Columbus Radio Control Racing Club Fair Shootout – Folks from around the state will converge on the fairgrounds for a few days to compete in some intense radio-controlled racing. The practice rounds take place on Friday, July 31st, and actual races take place on August 1st and 2nd. More information can be found at www.crcrc.com.
4. Earth Block Demonstration – A “100 percent sustainable home” will be constructed on site as a part of a demonstration done by a company specializing in the creation of “Earth Blocks“, a building material made of hydraulically compressed soil.
3. Cupcakes Galore – Homemade cupcakes will be entered for a competition, and cupcake cooking demonstrations will also be provided.
2. The Ohio Roller Girls – On Saturday, August 8th, The Ohio Roller Girls will join four other Ohio women’s derby leagues to play in six exhibition matchups. There is no extra charge for the event, and it will take place in the Show Place Pavilion starting at noon. More details can be found at OhioRollerGirls.com.
1. World Championship Mutton Bustin’ – This event has a strange name, but all you really need to know is that it’s pretty much a children’s version of bull riding, except with sheep. That’s right. If you need any reason to drag yourself out of your house this year and make it down to the fairgrounds, then this is it. Do it for the children:
