    Welcome to the New ColumbusUnderground.com

cu_8p0First things first… Happy New Year! 2009 is finally here! 2008 had its ups and downs, which we’ll be covering over the course of the next two weeks as we release the results of our recent “Best of 2008” survey. We’ve launched a weekly audio podcast show, and the very first episode is a special edition also featuring “The Best of 2008”. So while you’re busy today making resolutions and expectations for 2009, don’t forget to stop and think about the ones you may or may not have kept last year.

Oh, and before we start going into too much detail about the new site, there’s something else worth noting: You’re going to have to change your password. It’s very easy to do. Click the “Log In” link up in the top-right corner of any page and you’ll see a link for “Lost your password” (or you can click here for a shortcut). Enter your email address and you’ll get an email with further instructions (be sure to check your spam folder if you’re not getting or seeing it in your inbox). If your email address on CU is old or invalid, you’ll need to get in touch with us to change it. Our contact form can also be found up in the top-right corner of any page (click here for another shortcut). We’ll get your account updated ASAP so that you can get logged in and resume with your regular CU activities.

So… what all is new on the New Columbus Underground? Plenty. Allow me to give you a quick tour of what you’re seeing.

The first thing everyone is sure to notice is the major design overhaul. The look of CU has been refreshed for the new year, and some of the navigational items have been moved into places where they make a little bit more sense. The front page of the site is still populated with fresh Columbus news, and areas of interest are broken down both by “categories” and “tags” so that you can browse how you please. Special Featured Articles can be found in the Flipbook at the top of the sidebar, and our new and improved search engine can easily be found in the top-left corner of every page.

We’ve also got a new navigation menu across the top of the site to provide quicklinks to areas commonly needed within arm’s reach. The “Submit News” link is a fast new way to get your content posted to the front page of Columbus Underground, “Post an Event” takes you straight into the Events section, “Ask a Question” gives you quick access to the resourceful regulars on CU, and “Start a Conversation” gets the ball rolling on any topic you want to discuss.

The popular Columbus Underground Messageboard has received a facelift, but you’ll find that your favorite areas are all still in the same spots. The interface has been cleaned up and streamlined to make messageboard discussion easier and faster. There are a few new features to play around with as well, including topic tagging, social media profile settings, Ignore mode, and RSS feeds for following your favorite conversations. More detail on how these new features work can be found on the Help page (also located up in the top-right corner).

Over the course of the next few days you’ll notice several new regular features and original content being published on the New Columbus Underground. We’ve decided to rebalance our focus between news and features to deliver more types of content for our readers to enjoy. And if you’ve got something to share yourself, you can always easily submit it here.

As we mentioned previously, we’re also ringing in 2009 with our new weekly audio podcast show. The show format is a 30-minute topical conversation featuring prominent locals sharing their views and opinions on a variety of issues. The first episode is a special hour-long look back at 2008. Upcoming topics include the local technology scene, and a chat with several downtown retailers who find ways to make their businesses work.

Anyway, all of that is just the tip of the iceberg. As you start to play around a bit on the new site, you’ll find plenty of smaller features hidden around every corner that have been implemented to make Columbus Underground bigger and better in 2009. Nothing computer-related ever goes off without a hitch though, so if you notice any glitches or bugs or problems, please don’t hesitate to contact us to let us know and help us getting everything ironed out as quickly as possible.

So once again… Happy New Year everyone! We’re looking forward to a great 2009 and are extremly excited to officially welcome you to the new Columbus Underground!
