Most couples choose a time of year for their wedding and then find a date that works the best. When Katie Chio and Adam Einhorn were planning their wedding, they went for a very specific date -October 18th- and then worked everything else out.
“Adam and I had been together 8 years when we got married,” says Chio. “We knew we wanted a fall wedding, specifically on October 18th, our mid-birthday. (The day in the middle between our two birthdays). In spring of 2009, I looked at the calendar and realized October 18th would be a Sunday. So I asked Adam, “Do you want to get married this year? Or wait 5 years until it falls on the weekend again?” He said, “This year!” and on we went on our adventure of wedding planning.”
After having the date picked, they set about finding the rest of the pieces.
“We wanted an easy wedding,” she says. “Something outdoor and all in one. If I wouldn’t want to drive from my own ceremony to the reception, I wouldn’t expect my guests to either.”
Taylor Mansion provided the ease of one location for all, and was close to where the couple grew up. “Adam grew up down the street and I went to school a block over,” says Chio. “We had our ceremony in the front yard, cocktail hour in the house, and reception on the back patio under a big tent strung with twinkling lights.”
Nieces Cordelia and Miranda served as apple girls, dropping fall leaves and apples. Apples became a larger overall theme for the celebration.
“When I asked Adam if he liked apples, he gave me a knowing look and laughed, ‘Of course’. How silly of me! Adam has been a Mac user all his life, of course he likes Apple.”
The couple showcased their love of spicy food in the cake toppers and the floral details. Chio’s bouquet and Einhorn’s boutonniere featured hot chili peppers. Cake toppers were done in garlic and pepper, common flavor boosters in the couple’s cooking.
“In our house, our dishes are guaranteed to have a hefty amount of both,” says Chio. “A little extra garlic for him, a little extra spicy for me.”
Wedding rings are a wonderful remembrance of this happy day, and a symbol of how to live their lives together.
“Our rings are custom made with tetris shapes on the outside,” says Chio. “Tetris is a game we played often together. We liked the idea that life will give whatever pieces, we just do our best to make things work.”
