WCBE (90.5 FM) went on the air in 1956, and originally began as an educational tool for Columbus City Schools. 55 years later, the station has gone through several evolutions to become a charter member station of NPR with an Adult Alternative music format.
“I’m amazed at how far we’ve come in five-and-a-half decades,” said general manager Dan Mushalko. “Yet, through it all, our founding mission to serve our community holds strong.”
To celebrate the occasion, WCBE is dedicating a full day of programming today to commemorate the milestone. Throughout the day, they’re airing profile pieces, interviews and highlights from the station’s long history of programming. Today’s music will also encompass the past five decades.
Additionally, open houses are being held at the station every hour today through 7pm.
A 55th Anniversary Documentary will be screened on Monday, October 10th at Shadowbox Live in the Brewery District, from 5:30pm to 8:30pm, which includes a mixer with past and present staff prior to the film.
