Speak Easy at Wild Goose Creative

Once upon a time there was a company called Wild Goose Creative who collaborated with the Storytellers of Central Ohio to host a special evening of storytelling. The company and the storytellers decided to call this event Speak Easy, and they welcomed everyone from the community to come and perhaps share their most interesting, poignant tales with each other.

The atmosphere was intimate, the lighting was low, the audience was engaged, and the cover charge was only $5. Stories about mattresses flying off of cars on 71 north, creepy breathy phone calls in the middle of the night, and hikers that are afraid of deer rolled off storytellers’ tongues like sweet honey off a spoon. All who came seemed to enjoy the art of storytelling, and many signed up to weave their own tales for listening ears. The evening was delightful, and not to worry, there are plenty more coming up.

Wild Goose Creative offers open mic story telling the 1st Thursday of each month, and everyone is welcome who wants to tell a story or simply listen. Storytelling has been around since the beginning of time, and like my Grandpa always told me everyone has a book in them. Speak Easy is not intended solely for professional storytellers, but for people “who have a true story to share and a willingness to share it” said Ryan Hoke, one of the founders of Wild Goose Creative.

Each month a prompt is given, which can be found ahead of time on the Wild Goose Creative website or become a fan of Speak Easy on Facebook. The prompt helps the storyteller hone in on an idea or a memory and then devise their story. Hoke mentioned that “once you have a story in mind, don’t be afraid to jump up and tell it. Enjoy yourself. Remember that a story you might not think is interesting because it happened to you, could be interesting to other people.”

On average there are 7 to 12 storytellers per night and each person tells about a 10 minute story (can be less, too, don’t fret if it’s your first time and your nerves make you motor through it). Try it out! Next month’s Speak Easy is Thursday, November 4 at 7 p.m. and the prompt is: The Late Late Show: Stories of Life After Dark – tales about the unique adventures and misadventures that happen between dusk and dawn! The cover charge is $5 and proceeds go to Columbus Story Adventures. Bring your own beverage (wine, beer, or alcohol is permitted).

Storytelling events happening at Wild Goose Creative this month are: The Art of the Harvest on Thursday, October 21 from 7 p.m – 10 p.m. and will be featuring an autumn celebration with music, storytelling, and yummy baked goods. Perhaps you like spooky stories that keep you awake at night and wanting to hide under your bed. If so, attend Spooky Tales on Saturday, October 30 from 8 p.m – 10 p.m. where four of Ohio’s best storytellers will give you a fright (come in costume!).
