The historic Palace Theatre has begun work on a $6.5 million dollar renovation, and will be closed for performances through November 2018.
The renovations will include an updated color scheme that will blend historical references with fresh, impactful colors, refurbished balcony seats with all new cushioning and upholstery, and new, contemporary seating on the main floor. New seats on the main floor will slightly reduce the theater’s capacity, but provide more accessibility and comfort to patrons.
The Columbus Association for the Performing Arts (CAPA), which owns and operates the Palace Theatre, is currently fundraising to secure the capital needed for the project. The building has not seen a renovation in 35 years.
“Most people don’t realize the impact the Palace has on what entertainment comes to Columbus,” says CAPA president and CEO Chad Whittington. “While the Ohio Theatre is often booked with multiple performances of one show, the Palace offers a house of similar size to the many in-demand, one-night-only artists and performances touring the country. This flexibility and availability enables a wide variety of artists to play Columbus that otherwise would not.”
