OSU College of Engineering Introduces 2 Online Cybersecurity Certifications

The Ohio State University College of Engineering has launched two new online for-credit, graduate-level cybersecurity certifications.

The Cybersecurity Design and Implementation Certificate (CDIC) and the Cybersecurity Offense and Defense Certificate (CODC) are delivered 100% online and enable students to broaden their knowledge and open new opportunities in a professional career path, helping to solve cybersecurity challenges in both government and business.

“Both certificates are geared towards preparing students and working professionals for positions in various disciplines and domains,” says Dr. Eylem Ekici, professor in the department of Electrical and Computer Engineering and instructor for the certifications. “The CIDC is geared towards integration of cyber security solutions in engineering design, while the CODC targets IT professionals and aligned more with computer science.”

“CODC contains information security and options in reverse engineering, network security and cryptography. CDIC includes security of autonomous systems and hardware security,” adds Julia Armstrong, managing director of the Institute for Cybersecurity and Digital Trust at Ohio State.

Having two certifications that focus on two sides of the cybersecurity coin allows for more inclusivity and varying technical backgrounds for prospective students.

“The certificates are designed to appeal to a broad base of students with STEM backgrounds,” says Ekici. “We do not expect students to have a uniform background. Program staff will be readily available to provide individualized help and assistance.”

While an existing expertise in cybersecurity may seem necessary, these certifications were designed to go well beyond IT-related positions.

“It is not only computer scientists that should be familiar with cybersecurity,” Ekici says. “Most companies with IT departments do have cybersecurity positions, and our certificate holders would be well-prepared for those jobs. However, engineering design and managerial positions require a deeper understanding and background of cybersecurity, too. Both certificates are open to learners with experience in financial, automotive, healthcare, or cloud services, and many additional engineering sectors.”

Students may enroll in the certificate programs in autumn or spring semester and select their own pace to completion, taking one or two courses per semester. The CDIC and the CODC are provided by The Ohio State University Institute for Cybersecurity and Digital Trust, the Computer Science and Electrical and Computer Engineering departments.
