There’s some scantily clad women coming soon to 2598 North High Street. Bossy Grrl’s Pin Up Joint is planning to open in February, offering the Old North Columbus neighborhood a new spot for coffee, beer and late night eats. As the name implies, the venue is being decked out in a pin-up art theme that should stand out quite a bit from the other businesses in the immediate vicinity.

We spoke recently with Bossy Grrl co-owner Amber Myers to find out more about the new business:

Q: Can you tell us first a bit about your background as it relates to the new business?

A: Bossy Grrl’s Pin Up Joint is owned and operated by myself and my wife, Sandy Rollins. We are a proud mom and mom shop. We are a Clintonville couple with 3 children. Sandy has worked in the restaurant and bar industry for years (she doesn’t want me to say how many because then someone could guess her age) and I have worked in entertainment and marketing for over 15 years, as well as worked in my undergrad as a bartender and in the grocery industry (bagger, meat cutter, hba manager, and anything else that needed done).

Q: So what got you interested in opening a cafe/bar venue?

A: Sandy and I wanted to create a business that included all the things we love: great coffee, beer, food, rockabilly pin up and vintage hot rods. We were fortunate to have a great friend and confidant in Anton Wood from Café Apropos. He has been so valuable in our start up planning and we will exclusively serve coffee roasted by him. As I was working on my business plan I mentioned it over a beer with a friend who just also happens to be the greatest bank president in probably the entire world (definitely the best in Columbus), Scott McComb from Heartland Bank. He too has been an unbelievable asset in helping bring our vision to life. To have a successful café owner and a bank president both support our idea has ultimately provided us with the confidence to surge forward with our concept.

Q: What drew you to the location in the Old North Columbus area?

A: I used to live on East Avenue and love that neighborhood. The location is actually one I used to walk by and look into with intrigue. Looking back, it was like my soul knew I’d be connected to this property someday. The neighborhood has continued to mature and we are excited to work with and get to know our neighbors to help grow our businesses together. The neighborhood has a great mix of businesses with Kobo and Ace of Cups offering great local and regional live music, Café Bella serving up unbelievable dishes, Jack and Benny’s has the best pancakes and sausage in town, Crosby Drug and Schreiners Hardware are great old school businesses with the best customer service, and of course Rendezvous Hair Salon which has the coolest stylists in the city.

Q: So, tell us a bit more about the theme of Bossy Grrl.

A: Bossy Grrl’s Pin Up Joint is a mix of classic and neo pin up. Bossy Grrl is Sandy’s stage name. She has since retired from performing, but still runs a local burlesque troupe, Sex Kitten Purr-lesque. We are trying to capture that sexy, flirty, fun style that burlesque dancers and rockabilly culture offer up. Pin curled hair, pompadours, corsets, pencil skirts, cuffed blue jeans and a good mustache wax are all things that just make us smile and we want to share those smiles with good friends at our joint. As we grow the business we plan to host burlesque shows and feature other local talent that blends with our rockabilly/pin up theme.

Q: It sounds like you have beer and coffee covered. Will you serve any food at the new venue?

A: We will start with a limited menu of gourmet grilled sandwiches (samiches as I like to call them) and add new and season items throughout the years. I am working to use local products where possible. My personal favorite on the menu is the “Elvis” which has peanut butter, banana and bacon or the “Elvis Impersonator” with peanut butter, banana and facon (soy bacon).

Q:  What are your planned hours and days of operation?

A: We will be open seven days a week and the hours will vary, but usually we will open in the morning at 8am for the coffee bar and we will stay open late to offer a new choice in late night fare. There is nothing better than a gooey grilled cheese to top off a night.
