Unusual Eats: The Sweet & Sour Burger from SuperChef’s

Loaded gourmet biggie burgers are a trend that just won’t die. It seems like Columbus sees a grand debut for a new hamburger-themed joint once a month. Bacon, ham, smoked gouda, onion rings, fried eggs: you name it, they’ll put it on your burger.

But one of the more interesting entries in the gourmet burger market isn’t from a burger joint. It’s from a superhero-themed breakfast place: SuperChef’s Breakfast & More. The burger in question is the Sweet & Sour Burger, and it is most definitely something else.

That “something else” is good, by the way. It’s not meant as a euphemism for “inedible.” The phrase is meant to denote the uniqueness of the burger’s toppings. It takes a regular fancy burger with a poofy bun and puts sweet chili glazed chicken and crab spread on it. You see what they’re doing there, right? It’s not every day you get to eat fish, fowl, and mammal all in one bite: pretty clever.

Cleverness aside, the combo works. It works for a few reasons. First, because the glazed chicken is in teeny little saucy chunks. That makes it stick to the burger almost like a relish, and generates consistent bites of flavor. The crab element isn’t incredibly crabby, it’s more like fluffy, rich cream cheese. Together, the combo doesn’t so much render sweet and sour, but rather sweet and HOT. There’s a kick, and it’s appreciated. Served with fries, the combo is also incredibly messy to eat, but you saw that coming.

You can score the special burger at either of the two SuperChe’fs locations (Downtown and Gahanna). Both are horrifically crowded on weekends, and that means sitting and waiting for three times longer than they’ll predict. Some people, evidently a lot of people, are cool with that. If you’re not, try out the burger at a less packed time, something like a Tuesday at 2 p.m.
