University City Kroger Will Close in October

After nearly 60 years of business, The Kroger Co.’s University City store, located at 2913 Olentangy River Rd., will close, according to a press release distributed on Thursday. The property’s landlord has chosen to redevelop the site and terminate the company’s lease, effective Monday, October 16.

“It has been an honor to serve the University community for the past 56 years,” said Bill Green, vice president of operations for Kroger’s Columbus Division, in a statement. “We look forward to providing continued service to our customers at our other campus-area Kroger locations.

The fuel center will close the same day, and customers are encouraged to redeem any fuel points at one of Kroger’s other 90 fuel centers, with the nearest located in the Fifth by Northwest neighborhood, at 1375 Chambers Rd.

Each of the University City store’s 63 associates will have the opportunity to transfer to another of the company’s 121 Columbus Division locations.

Kroger has been a presence in Central Ohio for 110 years, having established more than 100 facilities around Ohio, Michigan and the Ohio River Valley region. After the University City store closes, 16 locations will remain inside the I-270 loop.
