Great ribs in Columbus are a dime a dozen. Okay, not literally: ribs are not exactly budget food, but you can find them in every corner of Columbus.

Now Rib Tips – those are seldom seen. And at B & K Smokehouse, you can get a big mountain of them for $5.

Rib Tips are nugget-sized little chunks of rib meat (and some cartiledge stuff too), smoked and sauced and ready for gorging. Given the inedible components, they’re not really fork food. And while some diners advocate chewing on the whole nugget, then spitting out the bony bits… no.

So that means Rib Tips are finger food: fare for those who enjoy the labor of eating wings or crab legs. A little work yields lots of entertainment, messy hands (oh well) and meat that is tender and highly smoked. Because the tips are smallish, it means that every bit of meat is saturated in flavor from the sauce and smoker.

And since the Rib Tips are so darn cheap, it makes a good excuse to get into the house Wings. At $6.50/lb, a single order somehow ends up being eleven meaty chicken wings. The same heavy smokey flavor is infused into the flesh of that poultry. It’s a smoke-junkie’s paradise.

B&K offers two house sauces for its barbecue fare: a relish-like spicy sauce with a little tangy accent, or (my pick) a more traditional barbecue sauce. And of course, there’s ribs and greens and carrot cake and a full barbecue menu too. The half slab delivered a pile of neatly trimmed meaty sections.

There’s a couple of tables at the eatery, but most of traffic opts for carryout. You can find it at 1114 E. Main Street. The hours posted are Mondays through Saturdays, 11am until 7pm… however, the ribmaster suggested that Saturday service usually started closer to 1pm. So go late, and eat lots.
