Treat to Try: The Pastry Factory
The Pastry Factory is just the sort of thing we need to brighten up the grey, wintery Columbus days. Located in the North Market, the sweet spot made its debut during the pandemic as a pop-up, and has since adopted a permanent spot with counters filled with a host of mouthwatering treats: pastries and tarts and big building blocks of brownies.
But today’s mission takes it to the cupcake selection, which is itself epic with flavors well beyond the typical big-box cakery. At the Pastry Factory, you’ll find flavors with additions that range from hibiscus to limoncello. They’re pretty, thoughtfully topped treats built on deliberately constructed cakey foundations.
Case in point: The Sophisticated Buckeye. A dark chocolate cupcake base hosts an architectural swirl of almond-butter butter cream that nests the smallest, cutest buckeyes you’ll ever see. That’s a good start, yes? But we’re not done yet. Take a bite, and you’ll find a core of sweet filling nestled inside the cupcake: An optimized cake-to-confection ratio.
Venturing further into the selection, consider the Honey Lavender cupcake. It’s built on a lavender cupcake that one unsuspecting test subject couldn’t quite capture in words, “That cake part…it’s just…crazy good!” And as veteran cake fans know, a good cake foundation is as delightful as it is rare.
Topping the magic cake is buttercream icing glossed and be-dewed with droplets of honey. It outscored even the mighty Buckeye cupcake.
More adventures await as you explore further in the cupcake selection: The White Rabbit incorporates sautéed parsnips with golden raisins; the Key Lime offers up another version that includes a tunnel of extra goodness. The options change on a daily basis. And if you don’t find the flavor you have in mind, The Pastry Factory takes special orders from a menu that includes the cupcakes, full cakes, danishes, tarts and macarons.
