Treat To Try: The Omega Cake

A whole heck of a lot has been going on in the North Market. Jeni’s relocated to the other side of the building, Pistacia Vera moved in. It’s all cattywampus inside -but in a good way.

In the midst of all the changes, Omega Artisan Baking is a beacon of stability. It’s right there in the corner, with its breads and addictive cinnamon rolls. The bakery doesn’t have to make news-breaking changes to be worthy of attention: it has the Omega Cake.

The Omega Cake is something like a Hostess Ho Ho. In fact, it’s all the lovable things about a Ho Ho, without the polysorbate 60 and sorbitan monostearate. If you need those things to enjoy a a little dessert confection, then you’re out of luck.

But for those who value the joy of a chocolate cake, white filling and a chocolate shell, this baby is for you.

At the foundation of the Omega Cake sits a chocolate cake with fine, tender texture and a mild flavor. On top of that sits a giant poof of white filling. The filling is a silky-smooth mountain of airy sweetness. All of that is then enrobed in a dark chocolate shell.

For those who like to disassemble their desserts, each element is worthy of consumption — even the cake (which is sometimes an afterthought, at lesser bakeries). That said, it’s sublime as a combination: the shell has an intense chocolate charge that merges magnificently with the poofy sweetness of the filling.

Omega Bakery does more than just sweets and breads. It posts a menu that can include bacon tartlets, quiches and soups as options too — as well as croissants, scones and muffins.

It’s located inside of the North Market at 59 Spruce Street. Market hours are Tuesdays through Fridays from 9am until 7pm, Saturdays from 8am until 5pm and Sundays from noon until 5pm.
