Treat to Try: Sí Señor Chocotejas

Chocolate is good. And everyone has their preference: dark, milk, bittersweet, white, which isn’t technically chocolate, but who really cares? Chocolate treats take us back to our childhood – rewards for jobs well done, a bonding ritual between best friends, the only thing to spend one’s allowance on.

The chocotejas at Sí Señor, the Latin American-influenced eatery located at 72 East Lynn Street, are this kind of adolescence-reviving candy, a bonbon from back home in Peru that was often given as gifts to kids and kids-at-heart.

It arrives in a beautiful white and gold wrapper that immediately makes you feel like you’re about to open something special. What’s inside may not look like much – a misshapen brown lump with little peaks all over it – but upon first bite, I dare you not to smile, even giggle, as you may have done in your youth.

The milk chocolate is sweet, as all milk chocolate is, but it’s not as sweet as the commercial brand of chocolate used in such bars as Snickers or Milky Way. The dulce de leche inside is heavenly gooey and chewy, as this type of caramel should be.

But it is the surprise of pecans that really makes this choco-treat shine. The pecans cut into the softness of the chocolate and dulce de leche, and offer both a textural contrast and a pleasing smokiness that’s needed so the confection isn’t too overly sweet. It’s so good.

The entire treat can be eaten in 3-4 bites, though I warn you, it may be gone sooner than that. Each of the chocotejas are perfectly individually-sized bites of decadence that’s the perfect end to any meal, and at a measly $1.75 a pop, no dessert is cheaper.

Sí Señor is open Monday to Friday, 11am-6pm and Saturdays from noon-4pm. Stop in for a sandwich and a chocoteja… or three. For a complete menu, visit www.sisenorlatinfusion.com.
