With a heritage that extends back to the likes of Grass Skirt and Surly Girl, you’d expect SheCreature Cocktails to be serious about its…cocktails. Watching the team in action, it’s easy to appreciate how bartending is two-parts art, one-part mad science, and one-part pure wizardry.

That same mix applies to SheCreature’s Mocktail scene. Designated drivers and teetotalers can score more than a Diet Coke at its pop-ups as the menu typically offers a carefully crafted mocktail option, too. After all, according to the National Epidemiological Survey on Alcohol, 30% of American adults don’t consume alcohol. That’s a chunk of the marketplace with boring beverages in their hands.

Consider SheCreature’s non-alcoholic alternatives. Case in point: the house Personal Trainer (the drink, not a fitness guru). It’s a magical mix of cranberry-rosemary syrup, blackberry cinnamon tea, a hint of lime to give it a little zing, and aquafaba. The resulting concoction tastes EXACTLY like the winter holidays feel.

What is aquafaba? It’s a vegan egg substitute made by soaking legumes (often chickpeas). Why? Well, it makes a nice foamy thickener in drinks. As a perk, thickness slows down the drinking process for enthusiastic gulpers, so your drink lasts longer. It’s more bang for the buck, and mocktails are typically priced around $5, so they’re already a bargain.

Of course, aquafaba makes an appearance in drinks that feature alcohol, too. SheCreature’s higher octane cocktail formulas also include edible glitter, Watershed chamomile gin, and squid milk. Squid milk is evidently representative of the wizardry in bartending.

On New Year’s Eve, SheCreature is teaming up with Yellow Brick Pizza at Ace of Cups (2619 N. High St.). The announcements mention some edible callbacks to the dearly departed Betty’s Pumpkin Love, as well as Surly Girl Pizza. Additionally, there will be a new house mocktail to ring in the new year. The event is all-ages from 7 – 11 p.m. At 11 p.m. (midnight in San Juan), the party is reserved for 21 and over.
