So, this morning I ran the 5K part of the Capital City Half Marathon and didn’t think I’d feel like going out to get a treat to share with you all after that. Plus, it’s hard to go to Pistacia Vera and only order one thing! This week, the treat is the Berry Cassis Bittersweet Flourless. It’s gluten free and nut free and you can get it in three sizes: mini for $6, terrine for $24 and a large for $39. I had the mini. It’s about 2 inches tall and 3 and a half inches long with a depth of about 1 and a half inches.
This cake is pretty rich and definitely for chocolate lovers. It’s eight layers atop a base of super thin chocolate. The flourless chocolate cake is fluffy but dense, there a layer of black currant curd, the berry buttercream is a thin layer that’s not too sweet and allows the beautiful color and flavor of the blackberry to shine through. On its own, the bittersweet chocolate mousse is more bitter than sweet, but when you get a bite with every layer, it’s a nice complement to the rest. Over all, the entire piece is very rich and very chocolatey. Having the blackberry on top is a nice burst of juiciness. It would be nice to have a few more berries come with the mini piece for that extra flavor, but having one on top of the mini makes the colorful swirl design pretty.
