Pattycake Bakery opens at 11 a.m. on Saturdays. In the minutes before the doors are unlocked, a line creeps from the front door, around the side, all the way to the back of the building. And while it’d take psychic skills to truly know the reason for all these people…
There’s a good bet it has something to do with the Saturday sticky buns.
Sticky buns are on the menu at Pattycake Bakery every Saturday. They look like cinnamon rolls, and they taste like cinnamon rolls, only better. How? At Pattycake, the sticky buns come in flavors, and those flavors change from week to week. Apple Butter, Bourbon Pecan…while we were hoping to hit a week when Peanut Butter was an option, that didn’t happen. That said, the Orange Sticky Bun provided plenty of solace.
The foundation for all the sticky buns is a dewy-soft dough, still warm from the oven. They’re swirled with a sugary cinnamon filing, and then, for the orange version, slathered with a bright, cheery citrus icing that tastes like something sweet Grandma used to make.
Of course, you can also score a bunch more baked goods while you’re there. In the opening moments on Saturday morning, custom cakes seemed to fly off the shelves. The vegan organic bakery is also well stocked with its muffins, cookies and cupcakes with swirled frosting tops.
For the first half of the pandemic, Pattycake served its customers through a pre-ordering process. It rejoined the regular retail world this summer, and it did so in fancy new digs a few blocks north of its original location. Taking over the space of Bread and Flowers, Pattycake’s wares are right at home: You can’t open the door without being struck with awe at the magical, sugary smells that fills the air of the establishment.
You’ll find it all at 3870 N. High St. in Clintonville.
