Treat to Try: OYO Truffles from Le Chocoholique

When Middle West Spirits opened in 2008, the philosophy was this: craft spirits with care, by hand, and with originality. That same attitude can be found at Le Chocoholique, the elegant truffle boutique located at 601 North High Street in the Short North, where they believe that artistry should be imbued into every aspect of a product.

Thus, when these two businesses combined their love and skill, the result was nothing short of beautiful and decadent. The OYO Whiskey Pecan and the OYO Honey Vanilla Truffles are the result of this should-be-sinful pairing – small bites that pack big flavor that will leave you wanting more.

The Whiskey Pecan has a crisp shell and an immediate subtle chocolate flavor. The flecks of pecan are an appropriate foil for the smoothness of the truffle’s interior, and after only a matter of seconds, brown-liquor warmth spreads from the chest up – as good whiskey should – and fills the mouth with a rich, pleasant voluptuousness that makes you smile before you’ve even realized your lips have moved.

It’s the kind of truffle you buy for the woman, or man, you love. Its lushness is deep and memorable. Whiskey and chocolate may not be the most obvious match, but the smokiness of the whiskey is a perfect complement to the slightly spicy cinnamon with which the pecans are roasted, and these both play well with the luxuriance of the artisan chocolate.

The Honey Vanilla is a little more delicate in its flavor profile, but equally as nuanced. The first thing you notice is the two different types of chocolate there is: a milk chocolate, which is where the vodka is infused, and a dark chocolate ganache shell. Neither is too sweet, and are set off nicely by the honey flavor of the vodka, which may not be recognizable, but is definitely present.

The vodka announces itself fully on the second bite, as it is the thing in there that will make you say,” hmm, what is that?” It makes the vanilla taste bolder, and the combination of that power with the layers of flavor provided by the two distinct chocolates makes the $2.49 price tag on this truffle so worth it.

You can purchase one, or a box, of these truffles at Le Chocoholique’s store, or place an order at www.lechocoholique.com.
