Treat to Try: Cream & Sugar

Cream & Sugar is the sort of place any neighborhood would kill to have. It’s a little stop you can hit with friends or family for a quick, affordable treat. You can score hand-packed and soft serve ice creams, sundaes, shakes — and Coney dogs for good measure. Prices start around $3, but you can break the bank and go all the way to an Abe Lincoln, and it’s all custom-made with care. It’s the stuff of which memorable traditions are made.

Just for a reference point, the closest snack options in my neighborhood are a Panera and a $14 gourmet burger place. They’re both good for lots of things, but they’re not the makings of bi-weekly family rituals with local character.

Meanwhile, at Cream & Sugar, there are layered parfait sundaes to enjoy. The parfaits are built on an uncommonly creamy, soothing soft-serve that’s layered with syrups and toppings. Peanuts & Chocolate makes a traditional favorite (bigger and packed with more flavor that the DQ original version), but there are other options, including Triple Berry and a promising sounding variation called Nutter Butter.

Or for those expecting coffee from a joint called “Cream & Sugar,” there’s a float made using the house soft serve and Stauf’s.

For those who prefer scooped, there’s a bevy of funky flavors to try. Case in point: the irresistibly named $&@! Just Got Real comes with an equally irresistible combo of mellow caramel ice cream with nuggets of sea salt fudge and salted cashews . . . chunks in every bite. It’s enough to keep all dessert-envy at bay, even when faced with an over-the-top banana split at the next table. That’s for next time.

Cream & Sugar is a seasonal joint, and as luck would have it, ice cream’s in season. You can find it out West at 2185 Sullivant Ave. It opens daily at 2 p.m.
