Now open about a year and a half in their retail shop, Cherbourg Bakery offers gluten-free and nut-free baked goodies. The cute shop is located in Bexley at 541 S. Drexel Avenue. Decorated inside with pretty light blue walls and accents of red, the shop is pretty small, but offers a few spots to sit inside and out. The counter has plenty of items to choose from and I picked the Double Lemon Bar. It’s a good size for one person, measuring 3 inches square and one inch tall. The coloring of the lemon filling is bright and the bar has an even coating of powdered sugar on top. At $2.75 each, it’s one of the bakery’s best selling items. Once you bite into one, it is easy to tell why.
The base of the bar is a pale, crumbly and buttery shortbread. The thick layer of lemon filling has a nice balance between sweet and tangy. It’s texture is smooth and full of flavor. I received a corner piece and the edges were browned and chewy, but didn’t stick in your teeth. If you like lemon, this bar is one you’ll need to try!
