Some earlier ColumbusUnderground conversation lead inevitabley to milkshakes. It’s probably time to have a milkshake Dish Deathmatch soon, but before launching the research project, Stauf’s Caramel Shake deserves a day of its own.

The Caramel Shake is not really on the menu, but it’s been around for years and the staff seems to know exactly what it is when you order. According to the receipt, it’s a Milky Way Shake (also not on the menu) – only without chocolate.

What it is is a giant glass of awesome. The shake-maker packs a serving glass chock full of ice cream; there’s hardly room for milk in that glass, but then the maker pours milk over it anyway, filling all the teeny crevices. All that goes into the blender with two types of caramel: Stauf’s has that special caramel  — the sweet syrup it uses for fancy coffee beverages, and then there’s also a squirt of regular caramel sauce.

All that glory goes into a blender, whirls around and yields the best thing ever. When ordering, the clerk will ask if you want whipped cream on top (who says “no” to that?). Once it’s topped, it’s ready to send your eyes rolling up in your head: it’s that good. Even for someone who always, ALWAYS prefers chocolate to caramel. The Caramel Milkshake is a game changer: it’s ice cold and creamy courtesy the ice cream, and it’s packed with a sweety-sweet caramel flavor that’s ten times more intense that those ridiculous caramel candies you might find rotting away in a candy dish.

Convinced? Go get one at Stauf’s today. You’ll find it at 1277 Grandview Avenue. You can get your milkshake on when it’s open Monday through Thursday from 6:30am until 10pm. On Fridays, it’s open til midnight. On Saturdays, it’s open from 7am until midnight, and Sundays from 8am until 10pm.
