Treat to Try: Burrito Babe Bakery
You might expect something with the name Burrito Babe Bakery to be selling…burritos, right? Or at least something Tex-Mex. And if not burritos, then something that looks like burritos. Burrito pendants, or burrito blankets or something, anything burrito.
That said, when first spotted at the Clintonville Jamboree, the Burrito Babe Bakery was peddling cute artisanal treats for dogs and cute artisanal vegan desserts for humans.
So, this is about the vegan snack cakes; we have not tasted the dog treats, and we’ll figure out the burrito situation later.
Sizable and heavy, and covered in (white or milk) chocolate, both the BBB Strawberry Snack Cake and the Chocolate Snack Cake are good picks. The former is white cake that is fully enrobed in a white chocolate blend that’s infused with dried strawberries to give it a natural, fruity kick. The latter is chocolate over chocolate cake. Both cakes have good cakey-texture. State-of-the-art vegan cookery has really come a long way in the last two decades. A quick look at the label shows a commitment to fair trade components (chocolate), and organic elements, too, most notably organic cane sugar, which always seems to make the most satisfying sweets.
The Clintonville Jamboree that hosted the BBB is an open air market at Dunedin and High. It pops up Saturdays in June at the approximate former location of the Clintonville Farmers’ Market, which is now situated at the Ohio History Center. While it offers fewer vendors than the farmers’ market, there are also smaller crowds (bonus!). The walkways are nicely populated, without being packed and panic-inducing. If you miss the walk around outdoors scene, it feels like perfection. Right now, the event is scheduled through July 10.
As for the whole burrito connection, the mystery was solved with a little online website stalking. The BBB also makes vegan burritos, when the occasion arises. You can find out more here: burritobabebakery.com.
