Bakes by Lo might be best known for its pretties. Its social media feed is filled with photos of breathtakingly gorgeous cookies and treats, decorated with an artistry that mere mortals simply don’t have. And the wares aren’t  just cute, they’re creative too. As in, conversation hearts frosted with dry burns on top, or maybe a set of vividly-hued cookies that look like they burst from the pages of Very Hungry Caterpillar.

But in spite of all the beautiful options, it was the drop cookies that beckoned the loudest at the counter. Drop cookies aren’t generally known for their aesthetic qualities, they’re typically lumpy and shades of taupe and brown. The ones found at Bakes by Lo are normal in that sense. They’re also as big as an outstretched hand.

There are classic choices, such as oatmeal raisin and chocolate chip. But don’t sleep on the Oreo option. It’s a classic cookie foundation, studded with gigantic chunks of Oreo cookie – not just the chocolate cookie shell, the coveted filling, too (and maybe some white chocolate chips to boot). The classic cookie foundation is just present enough to hold together the Oreo chunks, creating the perfect harmonious balance.

But why stop at cookies? The counter holds brownies, too, and the brownies are even bigger than the cookies. Consider the Salted Caramel version. Puddles of caramel cover its surface and it’s that baked-in topping that makes the magic. It’s not the saltiness of the caramel that’s noteworthy, it’s the pure butteriness. Butter is the thing that sets caramels apart, it distinguishes a good version from a dried-up chew from someone’s candy bowl. We’ve got butter here. And it presents itself in every bite of the dark, chocolatey brownies.

Bakes by Lo, and all its fancy treats, can be found in Hilliard at the Center Street Market, 5354 Center St.
