If you’re a fan of unique cocktails, local craft beer and other social drinking activities, then you likely had a good year of new venues to explore in 2019. Over 100 bars and restaurants opened this year, and our readers and editors helped to round up the top 10 spots to go out for a drink.

In first place was Gemüt Biergarten. This new brewery took over the old Engine House No. 12 at 734 Oak Street in Olde Towne East. The historic 122 year old building had been sitting empty for over a decade, most recently functioning as the Columbus Music Hall venue, which closed in 2008.

In August it was reborn as Gemüt, and as the name implies, they’ve got a focus on German-style beers and food.

“Each of the flagship brews pulls its name from Germanic Mythology,” explained CU Associate Editor Susan Post in a preview when Gemüt launched. “Alfheim, for example, is the home of the light elves, corresponding to the golden color of a hefeweizen.”

The owners of the new brewery spent some time on decor, updating stained glass windows and adding a large outdoor patio. A menu was also developed that includes bratwurst, schnitzel, käsespätzle, and of course… pretzels.
