Tides Sink Clippers 6-5 in Home Game Loss

The Columbus Clippers (57-52) were beat by the Norfolk Tides (50-58) 6-5 Saturday night. The Clippers hit three homers at Huntington Park, but the Tides continued their roll through the International League with the win. The Clippers did not lose their one game lead in the division thanks to Indianapolis’ loss earlier in the day.

T.J. House (1-4, 3.79 ERA) had a rough start and finish to his night. He allowed six runs, on 10 hits, with one walk and two strikeouts in six and one-third innings. Robert Coello (4-1, 1.62 ERA) picked up the win for Norfolk out of the bullpen and Preston Guilmet recorded the final outs for his eighth save.

Tyler Wilson (2-0, 2.53 ERA) had a solid start, but received no decision after allowing a homer to start the sixth. He finished with five innings pitched, three runs allowed on three hits and three walks and five strikeouts.

A hit batter to start the second turned into a rally for the Tides. Christian Walker was hit by a pitch and went to third on a Steve Clevenger single to right. Consecutive RBI singles by Francisco Peguero and Cord Phelps opened the scoring. A single by Steve Lombardozzi loaded the bases with one out and an Ivan De Jesus RBI single with two outs scored a third run, but Phelps was thrown out at the plate by Clippers right fielder Matt Carson to end the inning.

Columbus got a pair back in the bottom of the frame. He hit his 11th homer with two outs after a Carlos Moncrief one-out walk. The 11 homers are one shy of Ciriaco’s career high with Toledo in 2012 and good for second on the Clippers.

Francisco Lindor made an impact defensively in his first game at Huntington Park and made an offensive contribution in game two. The Indians’ top prospect led off the sixth with a homer off the scoreboard and tied the game. It was his first Triple-A homer and first RBI.

The Tides were high in the seventh. They scored three runs thanks to RBI hits by Lombardozzi, Julio Borbon and Jimmy Paredes and it was 6-3 Norfolk.

Lindor went deep again in the eighth with his second solo shot. It was his first career multi-homer game.

The Clippers got the tying run aboard in the ninth, but Jesus Aguilar was stranded after a two-out pinch hit single.

The Clippers turn to Gabriel Arias (4-2, 3.76 ERA) opposite of Chris Jones (6-5, 3.79 ERA) and the Norfolk Tides Sunday. First pitch is 6:05 p.m.
