See The Master as the greatest living American filmmaker (that’s right, I said it!) meant it to be seen. The Wexner Center for the Arts is the first theater in Ohio to screen Paul Thomas Anderson’s phenomenal film in the format he envisioned, 70mm.

Why 70mm? The acuity of the image produced by this film stock, which is twice as wide as traditional 35mm, is stunning. It projects a picture of tremendous, vivid visual clarity, creating perhaps the highest quality image possible. While this is the film stock Anderson used to shoot The Master, few theaters in the country are able to project 70mm. Luckily for all of us, the Wex is.

Any other reasons to see this film? Well, because if you did see it, you didn’t see it in 70mm. And if you didn’t see it, you missed the best film of 2012.

The filmmaker’s most confident and ambitious work to date is only the latest in a string of near-perfect movies: Hard Eight, Boogie Nights, Magnolia, Punch-Drunk Love, There Will Be Blood. Not a lot of misses here.

This three-time Oscar nominee follows a dangerously damaged WWII vet (a breathtaking Joaquin Phoenix) who finds himself caught up in “The Cause” – a religious movement fronted by the enigmatic Lancaster Dodd (Philip Seymour Hoffman, incandescent as always).

All of which Anderson places in a historical context he beautifully and faithfully recreates. He adds to that picture an imposing score and an impeccably designed set. And you can experience it all in 70 mm.

What are you waiting for? The film unspools this Thursday, Friday and Saturday (6/6 – 6/8) at 7pm. For ticket information, visit www.wexarts.org.
