Belle’s Bread is a great place for treasure hunting in the culinary department. First, because you can walk around and look at all the goodies before buying: second, because it’s dirt-cheap. Most of the thrilling stuff is priced under $5.
So consider the Fried Shrimp Roll found in the refrigerator section, tightly bound in saran wrap. It’s crunchy fried shrimp, served cold in a house-baked bun with an especially interesting mix of condiments.
While cold pizza and cold fried chicken might be staples for Midwestern palates, cold, breaded seafood is less typically embraced. It’s time to embrace the shrimp.
Inside the sandwich, the two fried shrimp fingers keep their crunchiness. Although unconventionally shaped, the fingers aren’t ground shrimp; the tail is still on. Instead, the shrimp is sliced length-wise (as opposed to being butterflied). It’s tucked into the bun with a nest of traditional egg salad, crisp shredded cabbage and a green lettuce leaf.
All this glory can be found for the price of $2.95. The sandwich is smallish, so there’s plenty of fun money and stomach-space for two or three. Better yet: venture back to Belle’s counters and try out a new fun food.
Belle’s Bread can be found at 1168 Kenny Centre Mall. It’s open Tuesdays through Saturdays from 10am until 7pm. On Sundays, it’s open from noon until 5pm.
