2020 was a difficult year for artists, art galleries, art patrons and everyone else involved in the process. Many exhibitioners have had to figure out ways to move shows online if possible, or hold off on programming all together for a full year. We asked our readers and editors about the best arts organizations of 2020, and the number one spot went to the largest arts organization that spent the year helping the others: The Greater Columbus Arts Council (GCAC).
GCAC’s own Arts Festival was one of the first large events to be cancelled in 2020 and the organization spent the year doling out COVID-19 relief grants and supporting local arts organization through their Columbus Makes Art advertising campaign. Special attention from GCAC was paid to public art, both in the form of protest murals as well as new works created throughout the year, as it was a form of expression that could be viewed safely while following social distancing protocols.
In other news, GCAC relocated their offices in 2020 to a new spot housed at 182 East Long Street, providing them more visibility to the community and a new exhibition space as well.
