In the summer of 2005, when the Ohio Roller Girls first laced up their skates and began to practice the forgotten art of roller derby, they faced their share of growing pains.
First-time female athletes eager to join the city’s flat-track derby organization struggled to master difficult maneuvers. The riot-grrl kitsch seemed, at the outset, to be as important as learning to skate. Some bouts (derby-speak for games) were slow, rough and clumsy.
