The Market Italian Village Opening This Summer

The eastern corner of Summit Street and Third Avenue has been under construction for some time. Formerly a convenience pit stop for beer, cigarettes, and snacks, a new 3,500 square feet market is set to open at 1022 Summit Street at the end of July or beginning of August.

The Market Italian Village is the latest project from Ali Alshahal and his A&R Development Group, who also own four other restaurants in the campus/Clintonville corridor: Café del Mondo, Fourth Street Bar & Grill, The Crest Gastropub, and Ethyl & Tank.

Designed to service every food-related need, The Market is a grocery, butcher shop, deli, wine store, bar, coffee shop, and eatery. Guests will be able to purchase produce from local farms and gardens, as well as a special selection of sauces, breads, pastas, and spices.

From the deli, artisan cheeses and meats from both Ohio and around the world will be offered. The deli will also have a build-your-own salad station, grab-and-go deli sandwiches, and Sicilian-style pizzas.

A full-service butcher shop will carry an assortment of grass-fed, cured meats, dry-aged beef, and house-made sausages. Alshahal, a long time practitioner of sustainability in his restaurants, will also use The Market to supply meats for their operations.

Breads, pastries, and sweets sold at The Market will be produced at Flour & Peel , the new artisan bakery in development inside Café del Mondo. The bakery will also make fresh pasta, both for retail sale and for use in Alshahal’s restaurants.

Wines will be sold by the bottle or glass in the small bar area located in The Market. They will also serve a selection of craft beers and top-shelf and barrel-aged spirits. A small café will provide locally-roasted, as well as direct-trade coffees and teas, from the city and around the nation.

Visitors will also find The Market carrying a menu of French and Italian-inspired small plates using local, seasonal, sustainable ingredients. This will all be prepared in one of the main attractions at The Market: an authentic Italian, wood-fired oven.

“Our businesses are innovative, exciting, and have been evolving with a life of their own,” shares Alshahal. “This is not just another store that sells the same processed foods and highly distributed products. Every product is hand-picked and tasted to make sure it mirrors our vision.”

The Market Italian Village is set to open sometime in late July or early August with daily hours of operation.
