The List: 7 Great Places to Get Your Growl On in Columbus

When it comes to beer trends, growlers are certainly all the rage in Columbus right now. Just about every local brewery is now filling growlers of their own concoctions, and grocery stores are even getting into the mix with places like Whole Foods (pictured up top), Weiland’s and even some Giant Eagle locations offering to fill you up.

Columbus Underground is celebrating Local Beer this week, brought to you by our friends at Savor Growl. All this week we’re featuring articles on breweries, beer shops, tastemakers, growler fill stations and more!

With dozens upon dozens of options to choose from, we’ve decided to provide a more curated list of growler fill stations by neighborhood to help you find the right place for your needs. Each of these shops carries a variety of local and regional craft beers, so they should be some of your top options for a variety of styles and flavors.

Downtown – The Barrel & Bottle

The North Market got a new wine shop two years ago when The Barrel & Bottle opened their doors, and these local beer enthusiasts were some of the first to hop on board the growler trend. The shop is small, so the selection is a bit more limited than some of the other large shops on our list, but you’re always bound to find something interesting on tap.

    Short North – House Beer

House Beer celebrated their one year anniversary in The Short North last weekend after opening in August of 2012. One part bar, one part retail shop — this store features a lineup of over 150 beers in bottles and on draft, and will fill growlers on site with any of the beers they currently have on tap for the day.

Olde Towne East – Corner Stone Craft Beer & Wine

Olde Towne Easters gained a neighborhood wine and beer store in February when the team behind The Tavern opened up Corner Stone just a short walk down Oak Street. In the back room of this bottle shop you’ll find a bar where drafts and be tasted and growlers can be filled with whatever beers are in the current rotation.

    Clintonville – Savor Growl

Savor is one of the newer shops to enter the growler arena, having opened their doors just at the beginning of the summer. Combining the best of both worlds, Savor offers a wide selection of bottled beer and wine in a retail setting, with bar-style service up front where draft beers can be sampled for growler fills.

Upper Arlington – The Daily Growler

Less than a year ago, The Daily Growler became the go-to stop just off Riverside Drive for Upper Arlington residents and other through-traffic to stop for a growler refill on their way home from work. This shop keeps an impressive rotation of 60 beers on draft, which can be tasted on site, drank as pints on site, or taken home in the comfort of your little brown jug.

5xNW / Grandview Heights – The Ohio Taproom

Another newcomer to the scene is The Ohio Taproom, located on Third Avenue just outside of Grandview Heights (it’s technically just barely inside the boundaries of the 5xNW neighborhood). This tiny 450 square foot store boasts a big selection with 20 beers on draft, all hailing from the great state of Ohio.

Brewery District – World of Beer Brewery District

The first Columbus World of Beer location opened nearby two years ago in the Brewery District and has continued to improve upon their formula ever since. Last summer saw the addition of a small outdoor patio, and this summer saw the addition of growler filling options. German Village and Brewery District residents now have easy access to a wide variety of draft beers to take home with them.
