The Angry Wiener Hits the Streets of Columbus

The hot dog has always been one of our favorite foods. Easy to eat, and easily manipulated, the lowly hot dog has come into its own in the most delicious ways over the past couple years, and we’re still not sick of the excessive and delectable ways one can adorn a hot dog.

Indeed, it’s the same for Deliea and Eric Griffiths, whose trip to Pink’s Hot Dogs in LA 10 years ago began a love affair with the wiener that never really faded. The couple took over The Cheesy Truck in 2012, but always held a soft spot for the humble frank.

When they made the decision to purchase another truck, they wanted to offer customers much what they offered at The Cheesy Truck: familiar comfort food prepared with epicurean expertise.

The Angry Wiener was born out of that desire, and officially launched yesterday. The truck is immediately recognizable, painted bright orange (Deliea’s current favorite color) with artwork designed by Eric.

The menu will feature 15 specialty dogs served on buttered, New England style buns in customer’s choice of all meat, all beef, turkey, or veggie franks. All items will be scratch-made and locally sourced, when possible, like the veggie franks, supplied by Columbus’ own The Good Frank.

The Angry Bird features truck-made yakisoba noodles and wasabi mayo on a turkey dog, while The Hounddog is topped with peanut butter and house-made bacon jam. The truck’s signature item, The Angry Wiener, is a ¼-pound frank with chili, bacon, jalapeños, sriracha ketchup, and spicy brown mustard.

Hot dogs will cost between $2.50-$4.50 per, with the exception of the truck’s flagship item. The Angry Wiener will also sell fries and mac ‘n’ cheese in plain and loaded versions. A complete meal, including a drink, will set customers back less than $8 on average, making this an affordable option for lunch or a quick dinner.

“We really enjoy the food truck business, and wanted to do something different, but still complementary, to Cheesy’s customers,” shares Deliea on the decision to go hot dog. “We wanted to take something people are very comfortable with, like hot dogs, and punch it up with toppings people may not be used to seeing.”

The Angry Wiener will make appearances at the Worst Kept Secret Fest on April 18th and 19th, as well as the Columbus Arts Festival, June 6th – 8th. The truck will also be a regular fixture at the Food Truck Court in the Columbus Commons beginning on May 8th.
