    And in Columbus, Ohio.

Beginning Thursday, Gateway Film Center will host in-person screenings for 11 Sundance films as part of the festival’s first-ever program of constellation theaters. As president and programmer of one of those in the network of theaters, Chris Hamel had a hand in choosing the Sundance selections to screen locally.

“I worked with the Sundance Film Festival programming team to help select films that we thought would interest our community and reflect the film center’s mission and values,” Hamel says.

When combing through the options, he kept the film center’s mission in mind.

“The film center, in its purest moments, is about discovery,” Hamel says. “I hope these selections— all premieres—reflect our hope that audiences see something new and thought provoking when they visit the center.”

According to Hamel, though he wasn’t looking for a particular mix of topics or genres, he did want to include a diverse group of storytellers and films that represent cultures from around the world.

There is one film he’s particularly keen for us to see.

“I love documentaries, and I think audiences won’t want to miss the opening night selection from director Nanfu Wang, In the Same Breath,” Hamel says.

A still-evolving program of panels and extras will also be available to ticket holders.

“These are hard to execute in the pandemic, but we’ll be offering panels and discussions all week long,” Hamel says. “People should visit our website as these are being added each day as we lead up to the festival.”

Tickets have already sold well enough to merit additional screens. Hamel says he wasn’t sure what kind of response they would see but clarifies that health and safety of guests and staff are his top priority. For that reason, theaters are only being booked to 30% of capacity. There are still passes as well as individual tickets available via the GFC website.

    Hamel’s excited.

“It’s the Sundance Film Festival in Columbus. People who feel comfortable should come and experience it!” he says. “For those who don’t feel comfortable or cannot attend, the Center’s virtual screening room has amazing films available now and people can go there to support our mission and see great new movies.”
