Smart Columbus Incentivizes Electric Vehicle Charging Stations in Apartment Projects

A new Smart Columbus program was announced today that aims to increase the number of electric vehicle charging stations in apartment and condominium buildings.

The program offers a rebate of $3,500 per plug or parking space to owners of condos or apartment buildings — or to developers of new residential buildings — with a maximum of $25,000 awarded to any one applicant. The total pot of money allocated to the program is $170,000.

If the initial response from developers is any indication, that money may go quickly.

Columbus Underground reached out to a number of local developers for their first impressions of the idea, asking if they would be likely to utilize the rebates.

“Yes, we are considering charging stations on our future projects,” said Jeff Bauer of Borror Properties, “and this rebate will certainly help solidify that plan.”

Brett Kaufman added his support, saying the program is a “perfect fit” for Kaufman Development.

Ted Orr from Crawford Hoying said that the company has already placed charging stations in a number of its developments — including Bridge Park in Dublin — and is eager to learn more about the new program.

The idea behind the incentive program, according to a press release from Smart Columbus, is to make it easier for those without access to a personal garage to own an electric vehicle.

“According to the U.S. Department of Energy and other sources, 80 to 85 percent of electric vehicle charging happens at home,” said Michael Stevens, Chief Innovation Officer for the City of Columbus. “When condo and apartment residents lack access to charging at home, it presents a major barrier to purchasing EVs, which are not only more sustainable, but are also easier to maintain. Through these grants, we hope to encourage more developers and property owners to install charging stations, giving our community greater access to EVs.”

More information on the program is available on the city’s Smart Columbus website.
