Holiday shopping in The Short North is getting a little bit easier this year with the addition of 25 new parking meters in the district on Friday, December 5th — which happens to also be the day before this year’s Holiday Hop event. The new meters will be scattered throughout the neighborhood, mostly on High Street, but also on side streets between Poplar Street and Second Avenue.
“This is the next step in making parking more convenient for motorists in the Short North, just in time for the holidays,” said Department of Public Service Director Tracie Davies. “We continue to work with all the stakeholders in the Short North to meet the parking needs of visitors, businesses and residents who contribute to the Short North’s vitality.”
Other recent changes to parking accommodations in the area include the removal of rush-hour restrictions at 413 parking spaces on High, Summit and Fourth Streets over the past year, and the completion of two new parking garage structures, the most recent of which opened last month. Additionally, the Franklin County Convention Authority just began construction on a new parking garage next to the Convention Center on Goodale Street, which will provide additional parking for Short North visitors.
“We appreciate how creatively and collaboratively the City of Columbus has worked to be responsive to some of the easy to implement recommendations coming out of the Short North Parking Study,” said Betsy Pandora, Executive Director of the Short North Alliance. “We think these additional meters coupled with other new amenities and resources like the CBUS circular, car2go, and our two newest parking garages, will provide visitors with a great experience getting to the Short North Arts District on Holiday Hop and throughout the holiday shopping season this year.”
