First and foremost, it’s a sandwich — a hulking sourdough gut-buster stuffed with 2 1/2 pounds of ham, sirloin and turkey. For six years, it has been a staple at a South Side eatery. Tonight, though, the Dagwood at the Ohio Deli & Restaurant will be more than just a feast. It will be a prime-time star.

The meaty behemoth is part of a Columbus-themed episode of Man v. Food, a new Travel Channel series that follows host Adam Richman throughout the nation in search of daunting — if not gluttonous — food challenges.

His latest mission: Devour the Dagwood (plus fries and a pickle) within 30 minutes, earning him a commemorative Ohio Deli T-shirt (available in sizes large through 3XL) and a Polaroid on a wall of fame at the restaurant, 3444 S. High St.

The renown grew with a Web video of a Dagwood challenge — posted on Columbusunderground.com in March — that spawned multiple discussion threads on the site. The video also amassed 3,200 views on YouTube.

Man v. Food will be shown at 10:30 tonight on the Travel Channel. It will be shown again at 11:30 tonight, 2:30 a.m. Thursday, 10:30 a.m. Saturday and 11:30 a.m. Sunday.
