After little more than eight months in the University District, Rooks Tavern announced its permanent closure today.

“Friends, it is with a heavy heart that we must announce the permanent closure of Rooks Tavern,” the owners wrote in a Facebook post. “Together we made a beautiful thing, even if only for a short time. Fun was had, friendships begun, and memories made over great food and drinks. In this most important way, we accomplished what we set out to do.”

Owners John Havens and Aaron Mercier brought Rooks to life, offering a menu centered on barbecue and southern fare, covering everything from brunch to late-night snacks. The two had been friends for years, first throwing “epic dinner parties with craft beer, food, fire and amazing friends” before opening Rooks Tavern at 195 Chittenden Avenue last November.

The announcement left out their plans for the future and the reason for the closure, but said they’d be “moving forward with undiminished passion for our trade, full of the warm memories we made with each other and with you all.”
