Review: The Inn & Spa at Cedar Falls

The Inn & Spa at Cedar Falls is located at the Hocking Hills State Park, and housed inside of two historically preserved 1840s-era cabins. Located 80 minutes south-east of Columbus, The Inn & Spa at Cedar Falls is a great weekend getaway retreat destination. The setting is beautiful and relaxing, the people are very hospitable and kind, and the food is delicious. We recently visited the restaurant on a Saturday evening for dinner and a Sunday morning for breakfast. When we arrived for dinner on Saturday, we opted to sit indoors. We were guided through the open kitchen to a table in the middle dining room area.

Instead of bread, we were started with a basket containing a variety of styles of crackers along with the Inn’s homemade Wisconsin Cheese Ball and an Olive Tapenade.

Our next course was a Caramelized Onion Soup. It had a light, clean flavor and the onion was very tender. Our son Desi, who is almost two, surprisingly loved the onions as well. A fresh loaf of sourdough bread was also provided with the soup, which paired wonderfully.

Anne also had a salad of Mixed Greens with Homemade Vinaigrette. She said that she though it was a very good salad, nicely proportioned and that the dressing was tasty.

Anne ordered the Bay of Fundy Salmon, Pan Seared w/Honey-Ginger Glaze, Served w/Chef’s Choice of Vegetable & Jasmine Rice. ($32). The salmon was cooked perfectly and the glaze was just enough to give it a nice flavor. The chef’s choice of vegetable for the day was broccolini. She was happy with this dish, and pleased with the appropriately-sized portions.

I ordered the Peppered Filet Mignon ($35) which was composed of a roasted filet topped with sauteed peppers, a sun-dried tomato demi glace and served with redskin smashed potatoes and brocolini. I ordered the filet medium-well and it was cooked exactly to my liking. The steak was tender enough to cut with a fork, and one of the best filets i’ve had in quite some time. The peppers and potatoes were great, but the sun-dried tomato demi had a bit too much of a pasta-sauce style flavor. I think it could have been wonderful with anothr dish, but it wasn’t quite what I had in mind for a steak and potatoes sauce.

For dessert, we tried a Lavender and Honey Crème Brûlée. It was nicely cooked, the top was caramelized very well and gave way with a nice crunch. We thought the lavender flavor was a bit strong, but it was nice twist on what I consider one of my favorite desserts. The honey was sweet and tasty and farmed in Ohio. The gift shop at the Inn sold additional jars of Ohio honey as well as a variety of other Ohio-made products.

Anne ordered the Mixed Berry Cobbler with Vanilla Ice Cream and thought it was delicious. She especially loved the pastry. The berries included were blueberries, raspberries and blackberries. The whole dish worked together very well and was a wonderful way to end our meal.

On our way out for the evening, I took a quick photo of the bar area up front. It looked like a very cozy place to relax and have a glass of wine either before dinner or before heading to the sauna (if you are staying as a guest at the Inn).

The next morning we returned for their Sunday breakfast, which is normally only reserved for guests at the Inn, and served complimentary. In the main dining room they offered their homemade granola with fresh yogurt, milk, and fruit.

The other breakfast offering of the day was a Caramelized French Toast topped with sour cream and berries, with a side of ham and fruit. Anne was not a fan of the sour cream topping and said that she would have preferred a sweeter cream, but I thought it worked. The french toast served was almost more of a cake than it was actual sliced of toast, and I thought it was pretty amazing.

We opted to enjoy our breakfast outside on the patio, located in the back of the cabins. The patio is beautifully landscaped, and provides a great view of the historic cabins and wilderness surrounding you in the state park.

The Inn & Spa at Cedar Falls was a wonderful place to dine for both breakfast and dinner. Our servers were very attentive, accommodating, and friendly. They were also able to put together a pasta dish for our son to enjoy. Everyone who was dining there looked very relaxed, as it is really a beautiful setting for a memorable weekend outside of the city.

If you go, The Inn & Spa at Cedar Falls is located at 21190 State Route 374, Logan, OH 43138. Phone: 740-385-7489.
