German Village institution, Easy Street Cafe set up a satellite operation in Bexley that made its debut at the end of 2015 (technically, it’s in the Columbus neighborhood of Eastmoor, but branding itself as the Bexley locale). It’s dark inside the new digs, but not dank. The staff, in the aisle or at the counter grill; they all greet you when you walk in. There might even be a “honey” or two thrown around, in affectionate diner style.

The eating options include lots of favorites that are famliar to German Village fans. Many of the offerings have a distinct Greek accent, but there’s fare for straight-up fans of Americana too.


On the Greek side, you could start with somethng like Avgolemono Soup ($4.50). You could do that, but of all the things that Easy Street Cafe makes, it was the least favorite. It’s remniscient of canned cream-of-something soup, jazzed up with lemon-ish juice, rice, and a little extra chicken, carrots, and celery.


For Greek fans, go for one of the gyros instead. They come in several flavors, veggies, traditional souvlaki, and one made from Greek sausage (Loukanico sausage). The Greek Sausage Gyro ($7.95) provides the requisite pillowy pita, crunchy lettuce, tomatoes and cheese crumbles burying a plumb sausage. Flavor-wise, the sausage in on the comforting, mild side and the end result is shockingly less greasy than lots of gyros in Columbus.


Or heck, skip to Greek dessert and hit a Baklava Shake ($4.50). The kitchen puts the pastry right into the blender. The end result is thick like cement with baklava chunks that remain as treasures to find in the speckled, cinnamon-y sweet landscape.


Depart the Greek scene for a minute. Maybe more than a minute. If you hit the place midday on a weekend, you can do the regular menu AND a brunch with options such as omelets and pancakes. What you want to get is the Pig Sticks ($6.95). It’s early in the year, but they are easily the best thing that will happen to breakfast foods in 2016. You’ve had sausage wrapped in pancakes? Okay, this is not that. It’s like sausages wrapped in a crispy, crunchy feather-weight fritter. The fritter shell is dusted in powered sugar and cinnamon and served with syrup. For the first time in the history of humanity, the syrup on the side went untouched. There’s no reason to pollute the pure joy of its cracklin’ sweet pastry surrounding savory sausage.

There is probably more to life than sausage fritters. For example, there are also burgers, sandwiches and salads. In terms of the burger scene, the Jake & Elwood ($12.95 — pictured up top) is a biggie: two burgers, with cheddar and swiss plus lettuce and tomato, pickles and onions. Both it and the gyro are served house chips worth eating. They’re thickish, but still crunchy and salted enough to merit stomach space.

Evening diners will find that the menus expands to offer pizzas too (after 5pm). There are Greek-inspire toppings, as well as options such as Hawaiian and pepperoni too. Time it right, and you can hit the bar for the happy hour specials. As happy hours go, it’s a long one: 3 – 7pm Mondays through Fridays with deals on beer, cocktails and appetizers.
