Tonight, Foals are playing at The Newport with support from indie brother and sister duo Blondfire and four-piece Floridian rockers, Surfer Blood. The English band was on their way to Montreal when I had the pleasure to speak with guitarist, Jimmy Smith, about their intense new music video and plans after their tour whilst battling a bad phone connection.
Briana Henry: I recently read an interview where Edwin (in Foals) said that your shows are a bit aggressive. What does he man by that? I wasn’t sure if I should bring my face guard.
Jimmy Smith: I wouldn’t call it aggressive, it sounds very different than our albums. We do like to jump around a lot.
BH: The music video for “Late Night” is extremely graphic and powerful. Where did the concept for this video come from?
*Note: This video is extremely NSFW:
JS: It came across, like the cycle of life. That video is really dark, and the director is pretty daring.
BH: You guys are giving away tickets on Twitter. Why the use of coordinates instead of exact locations?
JS: We just thought it was quite fun. We still don’t know if anyone has found them, but there’s lot of tickets all over the world.
BH: What are your plans after this tour? The last dates are in Australia?
JS: I think we are going to carry on touring in Australia and Europe. We are going to just pick a date to stop and then go back into the studio.
On tour in support of their latest album, Holy Fire, “My Number” is my favorite track on the album. Tickets are $22 and can be purchased at the door.
