Powell Welcomes Ohio’s First Woodworking Studio

Board & Brush Creative Studio, the first shop of its kind to open in Ohio, is a woodworking workshop that hosts events and informative classes to help customers create their own personalized wood signs. The space has officially been open just over a month and is already booked through December. Owner Megan Gropp explained the appeal of her new studio: “It’s a casual environment for fun creativity.”

Although there are thirty-one Board & Brush locations across the nation, Gropp considers herself to be local as she is the owner of her studio and has complete creative control. Gropp’s studio offers the standard designs of other Board & Brush studios as well as her own personal designs that are only found in her Powell studio. In addition, she is currently in discussion with The Ohio State University for licensing rights to offer “Block O” and “Script Ohio” designs.

“I first attended a workshop in Indiana back in May,” Gropp explained. “Halfway through, I began texting my husband saying ‘we have to bring this to Ohio!’ and I didn’t let up until we began serious planning for opening a studio.” The first sign she made now hangs in her own studio as inspiration.

Gropp, who is working part-time in the nursing field, hopes to build enough clientele to make this her full-time career. She loves getting to meet new people that come into her studio, and she enjoys working with her customers to ensure they are pleased with their creations. During parties and workshops, Gropp gives fool-proof, step-by-step directions on how to make the signs. Instructions are given on sanding, weathering, staining, assembling, and personalized painting techniques. Once the signs are finished, Gropp assists in installing hardware on the back so customers walk out of the studio with a product that is ready to hang on their walls.

Located at 36 N Liberty Street in Powell, Board & Brush is open evenings and weekends for private parties as well as offering open workshops.
