Pop-up restaurants and one-night-only events have been the rage for the past couple years, and this phenomenon is coming to Columbus in one of the most unique ways. fRESHSTREET Yakitori, the popular Japanese street food pop-up specializing in white oak grilled skewers, will be teaming up with two award-winning chefs to present the first ever Pop-up in a Pop-up in Central Ohio on March 8th inside the Double Happiness Bar in the Brewery District, 482 South Front Street.

Chef Jonathon Sawyer is an Ohio native, hailing from Clevland where he has five eateries including the much-praised Greenhouse Tavern. In 2010, he was named one of Food & Wine Magazine‘s Best New Chefs, a title also shared by Chef Jenn Louis, chef and owner of Lincoln Restaurant and Sunshine Tavern in Portland, Oregon. Louis’ specialty is seasonal comfort, where she turns locally-sourced ingredients into sophisticated fare. She, much like Chef Jonathon, is an advocate for the green movement, and believes in supporting local and sustainable businesses.

These three styles and personalities will come together to showcase yakitori. There will be three menus from each of the chefs, each menu containing four to six items, all not necessarily yakitori. Some of the dishes to look out for are the Half Quail with XO Sauce, Hamachi Scraps w/belly, cheek, tail and veal sauce, and Grilled Pig Feet. In addition, entry to the event also gets you two cocktails designed to pair with your meal, and the opportunity to meet a couple of great chefs we’re lucky enough to have cook for us in Columbus.

Whether you’re a fan of Japanese BBQ, like to stalk celebrity chefs-in-training, or just want to support an inspired local effort, Pop-up in a Pop-up is the ideal event for you. Tickets are $50 for all you can eat plus two drinks, and selling quickly. The party goes from 7pm till 10pm.
