London alt-rock darlings Wolf Alice have stopped by Columbus quite a few times since they broke onto the scene with their brilliant debut album ‘My Love is Cool’ just three years ago. Since then the four-piece have racked up massive critical acclaim and a whole bunch of new fans. On Monday night, they returned to Columbus to play the Newport Music Hall in support of their second album, ‘Visions of a Life.’
Looking like a band full of confidence, the group strolled on stage right around 9 p.m. and casually launched in a contrasting one-two punch of ‘Heavenwards’ and ‘Yuk Foo’ as stage commanding singer/guitarist Ellie Rowsell’s vocals jumped from angelic to snarling rage.
Older song ‘You’re a Germ’ and fan-favourite ‘Moaning Lisa Smile’ are full of energy, but it’s the newer, more adventurous songs that really allow Wolf Alice to shine and push into the more ambitious sounds they’re clearly interested in perusing.
Exciting times look to be ahead for the band, and with a welcoming Columbus crowd awaiting them anytime they come here, hopefully it won’t be long before they bring more of their rock-genre expanding sounds to our stages.
Fellow Brits, The Big Pink, opened with a moody set of noise-pop, atmospheric lighting and a whole lot of smoke.
